MANILA, Philippines – Eight individuals ended up behind bars for illegally selling tickets for a basketball game at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City on Tuesday afternoon.
Police identified the alleged scalpers as Wilfedo Javier, 51; Rene Sioco Jr., 34; Alexander Mendoza, 38; Darwin Lumibao, 27; Anabel Argueza, 39; Rosalie Guevarra, 42; Susan Nunez, 57; and Reggie Malapitan, 24.
Quezon City Police District (QCPD) director Chief Supt. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar said operatives of the District Special Operations Unit (DSOU) proceeded to the area past 4 p.m. after receiving a tip from a concerned citizen about the rampant scalping outside the Big Dome in Cubao.
He said the policemen spotted the suspects while trying to attract basketball fans with a couple of Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) tickets outside the gates of the coliseum.
Eleazar noted that the suspects offered overpriced tickets, about 70 to 100 percent higher than the face prices.
Confiscated from the suspects were 29 tickets with printed prices ranging from P350 to P850 and six mobile phones.
Eleazar said the suspects, currently detained at the QCPD headquarters in Camp Karingal, will be charged with violation of a city ordinance prohibiting scalping or the selling of tickets outside the authorized ticket booth. – RBL
