MANILA, Philippines – Three moderate earthquakes struck the province of Surigao Del Sur on Thursday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the first quake with a magnitude of 4.5 occurred at 10:25 a.m.
The epicenter was traced seven kilometers northeast of Cortes town in Surigao Del Sur, which felt the quake at Intensity 3.
Surigao City in Surigao del Norte province felt the tremor at Intensity 2.
Phivolcs said the second tremor with a 3.5 magnitude was monitored three minutes later.
Its epicenter was traced 24 kilometers northeast of Cortes.
This time, the town of Cortes felt the quake at Intensity 2.
At around 10:58 a.m., Phivolcs recorded another tremor in the province that measured 3.6 on the Richter scale.
Its epicenter was located 10 kilometers northeast of Cortes.
Phivolcs said the quake was felt at Intensity 2 in Placer, Surigao Del Norte.
Shellah Mae Enbien, science research assistant of the Phivolcs’ Earthquake Monitoring Division, said there were no reported casualties or damages from the three tectonic quakes.
She added that Phivolcs was also not expecting aftershocks from these tremors.
Enbien said movements related to the Philippine Trench possibly triggered these tremors.
The Philippine Trench is located underwater east of the country that runs roughly from waters off Aurora down to Samar and past Mindanao. – EAN
