MANILA, Philippines – The Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) on Wednesday filed a criminal complaint against consumer advocate Perfecto Jaime Tagalog before the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office for pretending to be one of the members of the anti-crime group.
In a two-page complaint signed by its chairman Martin Diño and spokesperson Arsenio Evangelista, the VACC officials said Tagalog should be charged with the crime of “estafa under Article 318 (other deceits) of the Revised Penal Code” as he made false pretenses or misrepresentations when he introduced himself as VACC member in a press conference in Quezon City last April 21.
The complainants said the respondent is an “impostor” and that he has never been nor is an active member of VACC.
They also said Tagalog “has no authority or permission whatsoever to use” the name of the group.
The complainants said they have basis in filing the complaint since VACC chief coordinator Rosita Roque was there in the event and witnessed Tagalog affirming to one of the journalists that he was a member of the VACC.
“But when Tagalog was confronted by Roque, Tagalog evaded and hurriedly left the premises,” they stated in the affidavit.
The complainants further noted that not only Tagalog introduced himself as VACC member, he also alleged that Davao City is a smugglers haven.
During the press conference, the complainants said Tagalog also accused presidential aspirant Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and his son Paulo of being involved in the smuggling activities.
Tagalog said the smuggling of rice, electronic products, luxury vehicles, and “ukay-ukay” is rampant in Davao City because of the Duterte family.
“The acts of Mr. Tagalog of misrepresenting himself as
member of VACC and maliciously besmirching and prejudicing the name of presidential candidate Mayor Duterte and his family are affront to our organization and its members,” the complainants said.
“He cause undue damage and injury to VACC and its members. He deprived VACC and its members their good name, which they earn, value, and nurture,” they added.
Undoubtedly, the complainants said “Tagalog deceitfully claimed that he is a member of VACC to lend credence to his accusations against Mayor Duterte and to mislead the public for his own personal gains and benefits and that of his handlers, cohorts, and the ‘man-behind’ to the damage and prejudice of the complainants, the VACC, and its members.” -RBA
