MANILA, Philippines – The grandson of late former Maguindanao Governor Andal Ampatuan Sr. has asked the Quezon City court handling the 2009 Maguindanao massacre case to allow him to bring in a portable aircon inside his detention cell.
In a two-page omnibus motion filed at the QC Regional Trial Court Branch 221, accused Anwar Ampatuan Jr. said his request is intended for medical purposes and not just to attain a more favorable condition on his part.
Anwar said he is suffering from shortness of breath and skin allergies.
He said the shortness of breath has become more frequent and so with the skin flare-ups due to his physical condition and the current hot temperature inside the jail.
“To prevent a more severe reaction on the skin of the accused which can cause an outbreak and to alleviate the breathing difficulties, it is humbly requested from this Court to allow the accused to bring in a portable air condition to his detention cell,” as stated in the motion.
Anwar is among the 197 suspects initially charged for the gruesome murder of 58 people, including 32 media practitioners, at Ampatuan town in Maguindanao province on November 23, 2009.
His plea to reconsider an earlier order denying his bail petition was recently junked by the court.
He is currently detained at the QC Jail Annex in Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan, Taguig City. – AIB
