One Hurt, 150 Families Lose Homes In Quezon City Fire

MANILA, Philippines – A 16-year old girl was hurt in a fire that burned down at least 50 houses in a shanty community in Quezon City before dawn Sunday.

City fire marshal Senior Superintendent Jesus Fernandez identified the injured teenager as Rochel Enclona, who suffered a minor cut in her left foot.

Fernandez said the fire broke out at 1:32 a.m. in the house of one Antonio Adorna at Gem 7, Tibagan Compound in Brgy. Talipapa, Novaliches, QC.

He said the flame that reached third alarm, quickly spread to nearby houses, which were mostly made up of light wooden materials.

Fernandez said the fire, which was completely put out at 2:39 a.m., left some 150 families homeless.

He said neighbors blamed the mentally ill son of the owner’s house, Jerome Adorna, for setting the fire.

He said residents believed that the fire started, while Jerome was using illegal drugs in their home.

“Ang sabi ng mga residente doon ay may sira daw sa pag-iisip itong si Jerome dahil sa pagamit ng illegal drugs at posible daw nagsimula ang sunog habang gumagamit ito ng droga sa loob ng bahay,” Fernandez said.

“Iniimbestigahan pa namin ito kung totoo or hindi,” he added.

He said police already brought Jerome to a police station for questioning.

The QC fire department estimated the properties damaged in the fire to be worth P300,000.
